Fool's Ladder
I first thought about this piece twenty years ago, when I was working in marble and alabaster. I liked the idea of a square structure, cantilevered off its base – a heavy structure that seemed to defy gravity. But to defy gravity, the material had to support its own weight on a relatively small bases and I knew that neither marble nor alabaster could do that. But cast bronze does it with ease. In fact, this piece would support many many hundreds, perhaps thousands, of pounds before it failed. Yet the bright, open design conveys a lightness that I could not have come close to in stone.
