Heavy Sceptre
The sceptre was originally a weapon, but very early became an insignia of royalty. In truth, at 48 pounds this sceptre would tax all but the most powerful royals – by all accounts, Richard the Lionhearted would have handled it with ease. Each of the four vanes of the piece is three eighths of an inch thick, which doesn’t seem like a lot, but it gives the piece a massive look. Its patina is tradition, with a base coat of potash covered with strokes of ferric nitrate (brown/gold), copper nitrate (green/blue), and white.
