Symmetry Breaking
This piece is, for the most part, rigidly symmetrical. Eight curved vanes radiate around a virtual central post every 45 degrees. It could spin indefinitely around that post, were it not for the tiny protrusions that mar the symmetry of each vein at random intervals. They would unbalance the structure, eventually distorting it and tearing it to pieces as the rate of rotation accelerated. In the process, however, the brightly finished outer edges would make the top look like a golden globe as it spun.
