Dark Haven
Everyone has a different vision of a haven. This one was suggested by the keep of Desmond Castle, built in the 13th century in the exquisite town of Adare, Ireland. The keep is the high point of the castle, the last refuge of those under siege. In its day it must have been a dark haven indeed, several stories high, with few windows. Even today, when little of the floors is left, it is a dark, but oddly comforting place. At the time of a siege, those seeking refuge might be inside for months. It’s not clear that it would be very comforting for that length of time, though it would clearly be better than the alternative.
